On Tuesday, July 16, HPL’s Executive Board approved the motion for the library to go FINES FREE!
What we know:
- The decision will go into effect on September 1, 2024.
- The library’s leadership team is currently developing policies and procedures to support the board’s decision.
- The policy will address late fines and fees, not replacement fees for lost materials.
- Patrons may start noticing changes to their library accounts while we work through the logistics of the new process.
STAY TUNED!
More information will be shared as we work through the process of eliminating late fines. Visit our website and social media channels for news and updates.
Why Go Fines Free?
Fines Don't Bring In Significant Revenue
Less than 1/2 of 1% of the library's income is from overdue fines.
Fines Don't Bring Materials Back Faster
One study shows the average number of days an item is overdue fell by 42% after eliminating fines.
Fines Have a Negative Impact
24% of HPL cardholders can't check out materials because they have too many fines/fees.
Dropping Fines Will Increase Use
Libraries see an average increase of 40% more youth borrowers after dropping fines.
