Celebrate Earth Day at Sustainable Living Fair

Hedberg Public Library, in partnership with the City of Janesville Sustainable Janesville Committee, will host the Sustainable Living Fair in its Program Room from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, April 27. Along with 20 exhibitors, the Sustainable Living Fair will offer presentations for attendees to learn about sustainable eating, tree selection and planting, climate change, and sustainability efforts in Rock County.

"It has been great to see the event grow in both scope and attendance over the years," notes Matt Robinson, environmental technician with the City of Janesville. "There are a lot of sustainability-focused organizations and businesses in the local area that are doing great things for our community, so it is nice to bring everyone together for a day and hopefully draw some additional attention to their projects and causes."

The event is open to all ages and will provide hands-on activities for children as we celebrate Earth Day 2024 and its theme, Planet vs. Plastics, adds HPL's community engagement manager, René Bue.

The Sustainable Janesville Committee was formed to advise the City Administration and the City Council on issues of environmental sustainability. The committee collects public input on sustainability issues, examines potential sustainability initiatives, and provides recommendations related to environmental sustainability to the City Administration and the City Council, and is a centralized point of contact for all environmental and sustainability related items within the organization and the community.

Earth Day, celebrated annually on April 22, is a reminder of the importance of environmental conservation and sustainability, encouraging people to come together and take action for a healthier planet. The first Earth Day was recognized in 1970, and since then, EARTHDAY.ORG has mobilized over 1 billion people annually to protect the planet. EARTHDAY.ORG’s mission is to diversify, educate, and activate the environmental movement worldwide.

Planet vs. Plastics, the theme for 2024, highlights EARTHDAY.ORG’s commitment to end plastics for the sake of human and planetary health, demanding a 60% reduction in the production of all plastics by 2040.
