"I've come on orders from Berlin to fetch the three children." -- Gestapo agent, August 24, 1944.  With those chilling words Christa von Hofacker and her younger siblings found themselves ensnared in a web of family punishment designed to please one man - Adolf Hitler.  The furious dictator sought merciless revenge against not only Christa's father and the other Germans who had just tried to overthrow his government.  He wanted to torment their relatives, too, regardless of age or stature.  All of them.  Including every last child.
Ms. Bausum traveled twice to Germany and beyond to research this fascinating, little-known side of the Operation Valkyrie story - the revenge Hitler exacted on the conspirators and their families.  This story of perseverance comes to life through interviews Ms. Bausum conducted with the now adult "ghost children" as well as other primary sources.

Mapping Your World: a NEA Big Read Book Exploration & Activity for Ages 9 - 12 on Microsoft Teams

Monday, April 12, 2021 from 4:30 PM to 05:30 PM

What is a map? What does a map have to do with telling a story? How can a map help you find your way when you are lost - in the world or in sadness? How can a map help you make sense of the world? We will explore maps and create our own using the NEA Big Read children's book A Map Into the World by Kao Kalia Yang as our inspiration. Registration is required. A link to join Teams will be emailed to all registrants a few days before the class.

Before class pick up a Mapping Activity Pack at the HPL Children's Desk or call 608-758-6600 to arrange for curbside pick-up. You'll want to have these materials on hand along with pencils, crayons, markers, scissors, and glue and a space to work for the class.

Copies of A Map Into the World by Kao Kalia Yang are available in print and as ebook for instant download on hoopla through the library, if you would like to read it ahead of time.

NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) designed to broaden our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book.  Hedberg Public Library is one of 78 not-for-profit organizations to receive a grant to host an NEA Big Read project between September 2019 and June 2020. The NEA presents NEA Big Read in partnership with Arts Midwest.
