Obituaries at Hedberg Public Library
Janesville Gazette Obituaries
On microfilm, the library has the entire newspaper from
1845 to the present. The library keeps the paper newspaper for the past three months. Obituary
indexes to the newspaper are incomplete. Below are the indexes we have:
-
August 26, 1845 - 1907: A card file of obituary listings for this period of time was compiled
by the Rock County Genealogical Society and is now located in HPL's Janesville Room. Search by name
to learn the date the obituary appeared in the paper, then find the obituary in the Janesville Gazette microfilm.
-
January 1981 - January 1984, and January 1993 - now: An online index to obituary listings for this period of time was compiled by HPL staff and volunteers. Search
this database to find the date and page number of the obituary in the Janesville Gazette. Then go to the microfilm to make a copy for a small fee.
- The online version of the Janesville Gazette, contains the latest 100 obituaries in alpha order by last name. Death notices are in order by date. For past obituaries, search their OBITS CALENDAR or OBITS ARCHIVE. The last five years are available online.
- HPL has other print indices for death dates. Search RockCat or ask staff for assistance.
- Try the Access NewspaperArchive database to search for articles from U.S. newspapers. Some Janesville Gazette articles prior to 1970 are available here. NOTE: This database is *not* complete. If you don’t find it here, check the microfilm directly or ask staff for assistance.
If you can't find the obituary using the indexes above, but you know the date of death, you can search the microfilm for dates near the death. If you don't know the date of death, you can search resources listed above, or request a death certificate by contacting the Wisconsin Vital Records Services or the county courthouse in the county in which the death took place. Using the death date they supply, you can search for an obituary in the Janesville Gazette microfilm.
If you are not able to visit the library in person, you may request a copy through InterLibrary Loan. Your local library’s InterLibrary Loan (ILL) Department will contact our ILL department on your behalf. An obituary date or date of death is required for Interlibrary Loan requests. Contact your local library for this service.
You may also contact the library directly with your request at: referencedesk@hedbergpubliclibrary.org.
Out-of-state residents may be required to pay a small research fee.
